A special deal from Microsoft is designed to convince existing Foundation Server customers to make the jump to Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard.

The Redmond company uses Foundation Server to refer to both Windows Server 2008 Foundation and Windows Server 2008 R2 Foundation.

Via the new offer from the software giant businesses running Windows Server 2008 Foundation or Windows Server 2008 R2 Foundation can upgrade to Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard only in the same language as the original Foundation Server by benefiting from trade-in credit.

Customers interested in the upgrade need to visit the Windows Server Fulfillment site that Microsoft has set up.

The company said :“The Windows Server Fulfillment site offers an easy upgrade path to Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard at an attractive price by extending a trade-in credit to customers who have previously licensed a Foundation Server and who wish to upgrade to Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard” .

Client Access Licenses are required to access Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard. Foundation Server users who do not own Windows Server 2008 CALs will need to purchase the CALs in order to access Windows Server 2008 R2. Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard offered through this site comes with 5 CALs.

Microsoft notes that customers will also be able to buy more CAL packs if they’ll require them, and that the Windows Server Fulfillment site is the place to do it.

Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard upgrades will only be allowed on the same machines that were running Foundation Server. Only the deployment of Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard is complete, any Windows Server 2008 Foundation or Windows Server 2008 R2 Foundation will be terminated.

In order to upgrade Windows Server 2008 Foundation customers will need the Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard media. However those running Windows Server 2008 R2 Foundation will be able to upgrade just by using a Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard key.

Microsoft informed :"The program to enable Foundation Server to Windows Server R2 Standard trade-in credit will retire on September 30th 2011," .
