"Facebook is still on the rise, and as we're seeing the latest progress, number of its total users is closing in to 700 million users," socialbakers.com, which follows a number of Facebook stats, wrote.
"Top growing country in the last month was Brazil with more than 1,9 million of new users on Facebook. This is a huge growth of more than 11 %" it said.
"Following top growing countries on Facebook in the last month were: Indonesia, Philippines, Mexico and Argentina. The top ten list is closed by India, Colombia, Egypt and Turkey," it continued.
There are 687 million monthly users, according to the latest unofficial data from the site. At the rate at which Facebook is adding new users, there it should pass the 700 million users mark this month.
Unsurprisingly, Facebook is adding the most users in emerging markets with big internet audiences. Brazil led the way with almost 2 million new users in May, a 11 percent growth in the past month alone, for a total of 19 million people.
It looks like Facebook is finally making some headway in the country where Orkut has been dominating. If Facebook can keep its momentum, Orkut will lose the lead in the last market where the Google-owned social network was still number one.
There were 1.5 million new Facebook users in Indonesia, which is already the second biggest market for the site after the US, with almost 38 million users. There were 149 million Facebook users in the US, 6 million less than in April.
